Splendid Modern House

This Splendid Modern House in Oubaai Golf Estate, George, was thoughtfully designed for a retired couple. It is situated on a steep site with stunning southern ocean views.
To accommodate family visits during the December holidays, the design includes three guest bedrooms, strategically placed to ensure that their activities remain separate from the main bedroom.
The owners specifically requested that the main bedroom be located on the same level as the living area, fostering convenience and a seamless flow between spaces.

To maximize views, the main living area and bedroom are positioned on the first storey, while the three guest bedrooms are tucked beneath, carved into the sloping ground.
The main entrance features a screening stone wall for privacy, protecting the bedrooms and pergola deck.
A ventilated 1-meter-wide alley, along with a retaining wall, separates the basement from the surrounding soil, helping to prevent waterproofing and damp issues.
The main bedroom is situated on the southeastern side of the dwelling to capture early morning sunlight.
It opens onto a covered balcony, which is privately screened from the main balcony by a wall structure.
Vertical timber balusters are incorporated to limit direct sunlight on the bed while maintaining an airy atmosphere.

We employed mono-pitched roofs with clerestory windows to bring warm northern sunlight deep into the dwelling and illuminate the southern balcony.
To enhance views in the main living areas, all service spaces were strategically positioned on the northern side of the house.
To the north, a sunny pergola deck provides an ideal outdoor space, sheltered from the southeastern winds by the building structure.
The site’s positioning also creates a spacious grassy area perfect for the grandchildren to enjoy games of cricket.
Additionally, stepped retaining walls feature a thoughtfully designed garden, illuminated with soft lighting for enchanting evening ambiance.

"Form follows function—that has been misunderstood. Form and function should be one, joined in a spiritual union."
