Farm Halcyon, Stilbaai
Sensitive Modern Farmhouse

This Sensitive Modern Farmhouse is located on a picturesque farm along Jongensfontein Road. The farmer reached out for assistance after beginning the building process, with foundations already cast and walls rising to knee height in some areas.
We have been tasked with designing a cozy dwelling for the farm foreman and his small family, utilizing only the existing structure and walls as the shoeprint for the new design.

The dwelling is organized into three distinct structures, each serving a unique function.
The central area features an open-plan living space with an island kitchen and dining capabilities, seamlessly connecting the two wings of the home.
On the eastern side, you'll find two bedrooms and a shared bathroom, providing a comfortable private space for the family.
The western wing accommodates a single garage, offering convenient access and storage for vehicles and equipment.
The open-plan living area features an impressive overhanging sloped roof that extends over covered timber decks on both sides.
Full-height fenestration panels create a seamless connection between the living space and the patios, inviting the scenic landscape indoors.
These separate covered patios allow occupants to enjoy outdoor living regardless of wind direction, providing versatile spaces for relaxation and entertaining.

Naturally warm and traditional materials have been thoughtfully incorporated into the design.
Corrugated iron wall cladding contrasts beautifully with bagged red facebrick and concrete walls, creating a textured and inviting exterior.
Additionally, farm-style corrugated water tanks have been installed on sturdy stone plinths, enhancing the rustic charm of the dwelling while providing practical functionality.
The two bedrooms are located to the east of the living area, each adorned with steel pergola structures above timber decks, providing inviting outdoor spaces.
The connecting bathroom opens onto an enclosed feature garden, which includes a refreshing outdoor shower.

"Architecture should speak of its time and place, but yearn for timelessness."
